Never Liked Propaganda

January 22, 2009

One day, I received an email.

“It’s not what you are that matters, but what people think you are.”

Ok, point taken, very practical, very way-about-world. Marketing perspective.

I sent back an email.

“It’s not what people think you are that matters, but what you are.”

Doesn’t this make more sense? I thought to myself. That’s a rhetorical question. I choose the latter. That’s how I would go about my life. Which would you choose?

In a traffic jam, you get impatient and frustrated. On the road, you get angered and annoyed. Is it the car beside you that angered you? Is it the driver in front who annoyed you? Well, nothing and nobody made you angry. You made yourself angry and frustrated.

You know how teachings would say: “The Source of Irritation is in Yourself.” Yes, agreed. But then I say, let’s try to remove the Stimulus. =)

Never taken to propaganda when it’s too in-your-face. Works best when it’s subliminal. When I don’t know about it.

    Dear Elvin

I am really happy that you have your own blog!!!
It was my small wish that you will create a blog ^^

    I like this phrase:
“The Source of Irritation is in Yourself.”

    ~Looking forward to your ‘words’~

    Nice entry!
I agreed with what you said. “It’s not what people think you are that matters, but what you are.”

Still remember when i was young till secondary school, i always mind what others think about me and it does matters me alot. Maybe due to family, i grown up as a very quiet person who do not know how to mix around.

Slowly, i began to understand i’m who i’m. Why should i bother about what others think? It will be very tiring and we can’t please everyone.

So the best it to be ourselves, as long we are happy, the rest doesn’t matters. =) And you will live happier.

    Hi Elvin,

I do agree with your point of view. It should be the way how people live their lives, in the be-yourself manner.

That said, I guess when one is in the limelight, things change a little (or maybe a lot). Everything you do is under scrutiny and somehow, the image of oneself is portrayed through the eyes of the camera / media. Thus you become what people think you are, with given titles and names, whether you like it or not and whether you ARE or not.

Well, then again, I believe you’re best being your true self because You are who You are!

I think the above sentence is so true!

We live for ourself, not for e sake of others. So y care abt others.

Hey Elvin. Chanced upon your blog and thought your entry was interesting… but can’t see wherein the propaganda lies? were you referring to the statement in the email being propaganda? anyhow, i choose the latter too. I am of the opinion that you can become what people think you are, but then in that process you lose yourself, and if you aren’t “you”, what’s the point of even bothering of what would have been in the first place?

    Nice blog designed by Nat.
I guess Blue must be your fave colour …but this year, do wear more green and avoid bright red.
On your topic, I guess most of us wun like propaganda but sometimes, in your line of work, you have no choice but to play along and go with it.
At the end of the day, as long as you play your game well and not get involved so much so that it affects yourself and lose the ‘real you’.
If you hv a minute to spare, perhaps you can check your email …you may be in for a surprise from a friend …

i will choose the first more than the latter.
i cant tell the reason, because i dont know too.
i think what i care is the opinion and the feeling of the others. sometimes i would also felt that i had been losing myself, but i think the opinion and the feelings of the others still the most i care about….

I answered the same in my mind. before i even read your reply to the fellow. if we were to live like what ppl think.. i think life will be sick. to me, people around usually don’t give good comment, the only see the bad. but this only apply to here. not oversea. we live as what we are. afterall, we know ourselve better than anyone. =)

Yes. We should believe in ourselves.
I is just like you are making yourself shivering when you think that are Ghosts anywhere during the 7th month of Lunar Calendar, or make yourself “jin3 zhang1″ when exam arrives.
It is not the “things” around you, or the test paper, or the person who set the paper, or the grades you are going to get that annoyed you, coz u are just scaring yourself.
    Bravo, Elvin gege!

Hey,elvin!glad that u have your own personal blog now..=)anyway,among all the entries that you have posted so far,i liked this one the most cos it’s very true and real.i do agree with meiling and guilian especially.one of the motto in my life is to “be yourself’.i will NEVER ever change myself just to fit in a particular group cos ‘it’s not me’.sadly, most ppl live in a pretentious world nowadays…maybe they care a lot abt what others may think about them=(….that’s why i do agree when u said that this statement,
“It’s not what you are that matters, but what people think you are.” is very practical, very way-about-world and marketing perspective.

    Latter is always better.

Well, the propagandist’s purpose is to make one set of people forget that the other sets of people are human.

As long as you have made your choice, known or unknown doesn’t really matters. =)
