Everything Happens for a Reason?

January 31, 2009

You know how we like to say:

“Everything Happens for a Reason.”

We try to make sense of Events and of the World around us.

But What If it is just Non-Sense.

Il-Logical, Un-Reasonable and Ir-Rationalisable.

What If some things just So Happened.

By Accident, By Chance, By Random Order, By Chaos.

What then happens through Coincidence and What then happens by Fate?

How are we to Determine?

We try to take control of our lives by Reason and Logic. To gain a measure of control. Of Sanity. We try to string events together and draw a pattern to explain how our lives have become. We chain events together. That this happened because of that. To Be-Come Our Story. Singular events that Come one after another. And we try to link them all up so they all Be-Come. But not everything happens for a reason. As much as it makes us feel better if it is. Till we are ready to realise and accept that some things just So Happened. Ungoverned by Reason. Just Ungoverned. A Flux. Yes, Many Things Happen for a Reason. Some Do Not.

“If we admit that human life can be ruled by reason, then all possibility of life is destroyed.” — Krakauer, Joe. Into The Wild.

Imo, i don think everything happens for a reason. Just a very good n simple example- Love. Definately there’s no reason why u fell in love with that person tt caught your eye. As we oftenly says, love is blind. There’s no logical answer for it either.

I believe by luck, by chance, in fate and destiny! :)

Hmm, i don’t think everything happen for a reason.
There are things that happened out of a sudden. with no reason.

We care for one another without a reason. Family, loved ones, close friends. Is there a reason for us to show love and concern to them? when they are in need, is it cos of a reason thus we lend our hands?

Nope. It all comes from the bottom of our hearts. Sincerely is something that can’t be fake out.

Sometimes when you are making a decision, ppl around you will ask, why did you choose this? Why not that?

I can only tell them, there’s no particular reason. I just follow my heart. =)

Yes i agreed tt not everything happens for a reason especially family
We care for them w all our heart
Sincerity is something from our heart n cant be fake
As for love i believe its happens for a reason
I mean u cant just anyhow like a person rite?
As for any matter,i follow where my hearts leads me :-)

In life, some things are predestined and it sure happened for a reason … for example, the school we go to, the subjects we take, the work we do, the people we meet, and even the life that we live thenafter….sometimes, when we are older and look back, we realise that all these have happened for a reason ….
I know of someone whose birth no. (in those old days of KKH) was the birth date/month of his spouse … coincidental or fate?
Sometimes, we try (too) hard to pursue our dreams…but they may not realise ….so, at times, we live and let live….and take things in stride.
Be contented and be true, and cherish to those who love and care for us.

That’s a skeptical train of thought…chaining events n trying to gain control of what happens next n y.

To me..everything does happen for a reason. If one doesn’t do any harm deliberately on purpose, retribution won’t go back to him. One would have a sense of peace within him n towards others, still..he would not be free of suffering.
Logically till now no one can justify what r we doing on earth. How did the big bang happen, is it a natural/scientific phenomenon or many may wonder is there really a God. There’s too many mysteries in life, miracles that cannot be explained, that reason and logic –science could nvr justify this. So I totally agree with the quote by Krakauer.

I do believe that there is a God, who controls destiny of the past, present n future events. Although there may be a lot of suffering in life, it is for our own sake. Through suffering there is growth. Something like when u fall down, in the process of suffering, u’ll learn to be more tolerant of pain, n be careful next time. In all, it all boils down to one word. Love. Live and let life. Of course, suffering caused by laziness is foolish n unwanted. Working too hard is meaningless, rather take my stride and see beauty in my surrounding and every event that happens.

    Phrase seems familiar =)

    (Personal View)
Everything happens for a reason – I believe,
In finding the true meaning of event in live and that there is significance in every event of our lives, from the most joyful to the seemingly unjust. There is a need for us to discover the meaning in what has happened to us, seeing those experiences as a lesson or opportunity. Decoding the confusing or unfortunate moment in our lives to find solace and strength.

“If you take your eyes off your goals, all you see is obstacles.”

By the way, thanks for sharing. Looks like, you have read the book Into The Wild by Krakauer, Joe. I’ve been reading this book as well for quite sometime, was recommended by my best friend. Will try to finish it soon after my exam, to see if I can find new meanings for live. =)

    I believe that too.

At times I apply the same logic to shopping, though I rarely do that nowadays.

Buying something but discovered that you don’t really need it when you get home. But it could come in handy in the near future. It always happen all the time :)

There are things that happened that might make me angry or depressed. But God make sure that it’s a valuable lesson to be learned.

Thinking that way, it makes me a better person.

    My fave quote:
“We all die. The goal isn’t to live forever. The goal is to create something that will.” – Chuck Palahniuk

Wow, all the above replies are so thought-provoking. I shall share my thoughts too then.

There’s no way one can prove that EVERYTHING happens for a reason.

So, :) It’s actually very simple.

    It’s just a belief.

With this belief, one can organize one’s thinking in a way that leads to more productive outcomes, which in turn (perhaps), can make one’s life more meaningful through the process.

But deep down, we know that there are just some things that happened without a reason; When you struggle to think of a reason, then it could probably be that – it has happened without a reason.

That said, why is everyone so serious? Haha. Here’s something I’ve read recently:

A young couple drove several miles down a country road, not saying a word.
An earlier discussion had led to an argument, and neither wanted to concede their position.

As they passed a barnyard of mules and pigs, the husband sarcastically asked, “Are they relatives of yours?”

“Yes,” his wife replied. “I married into the family.”

    :)

Hmm frankly speaking i don’t think everything happen for a reason. The most common example is relationships… I remembered my fren just telling me last week that when god created adam and eve, he make them in such a way that adam had 1 bone lesser than eve, thus this causes adam to be a imperfect being.. In order to be perfect again, adam need to search all over for eve so that by being together, adam will then be perfect. This is why guys always have less bones than females, so that the guy will go around to search the missing bone of his, his soulmate in this context. Only when you find the suitable one, then could you leave happily with her ever after. This is why things such as divorce occurs in our everyday life. Man often go around and look for his own “eve” so that he can be perfect once again. However, things doesn’t always happen the way you want it to be, thus one must handle and experience lots of setbacks before the correct one can be found. It is because of these numerous setbacks that one experiences that makes you cherish the other party even more. IF EVERYTHING happen for a reason, then why are there still singles nowadays?? Sometimes, its just fate at work. If fate decreeds that you will remain as a bachelor or spinster, then so be it cause NOT everything happen for a reason and ONE can’t force something to happen especially when it comes to relationship..

life’s probably a contextual binary. if by putting our perspectives on either side of the line could actually give strength and faith to venture forward, that’s all it matters. life’s beautiful because of the bursting possibilities.

everyone’s got their philosophy in life. one that comes across true and unpretentious is living with convictions. we cannot determine what’s a good choice or a bad one until the outcome is laid in front of us. but having that conviction(s) in life is definitely one regret less in life.

it’d be really interesting to see how the responses develop =) and yeah it’s been quite an insightful read.

I like this quote. But not everything is totally like that.
I agree with you. Everything just happened because of a reason. The jiejies said that LOVE happened without a reason.
However, for me, even LOVE do happen with a reason. Why? Because you like him, love him, and try to do anything to win his or her heart. These are the reasons, isn’t it? LOVE your friends, family, relatives…? There is still a reason, or many behind it. You love your family bcs they are your blood tie, or you love your friends because they can share secrets with you and vice versa and they won’t betray you.
But girls, even Elvin gege said on his last sentence:
“Yes, Many Things Happen for a Reason. Some DO NOT.”

Elvin, I’m kinda surprised at how philosophical your blog entries are… does this apply all literature students? :p
Many people like to ask “why is this happening” or “why is that so”, but can we really get answers (so called reasons) to every single question? You are better off in comparison with someone worse off than you. When you meet a bad situation or some bad luck befalls on you, then you will ask “why me”. Who can answer your question?
No matter what the reason is, being responsible for the life you want, living it to the fullest, only can you hold yourself to “why is my life like this”.

P/S: After typing so much, I think I have no idea what I was saying. If anyone can understand, please let me know. =D

well, for my point of view, it depends on how u view u.
if u think it is, sure it is and contrastively.
good thought associated with good feeling and action taken= excellent consequence.

Why do you NOT believe that everything happens for a reason? Perhaps that is the real question worth examining. I beg to contrast your ending quote. My reason? My theory is that life is a buffet, but it is not an ala carte buffet. We can all make decisions about how to lead our lives, and in fact, as economic creatures, we are always trying to compute an optimal solution to every situation. However, we are always constrained by our circumstances. Hence, we optimize based on a set of constraints. One that we may not always be able to define. Yet we know it exists. If we begin to question this, then we are questioning the need for existence itself…

Just because something has no apparent logic or logic we can understand, does not mean it happened for no reason.

AND, if something was say “random” or “for no reason” it will likely have a resulting effect on your life, therefore, that may have been its reason.

So what if everything really does happen for a reason?

What if it is not just non-sense, illogical, unreasonable and irrational?

what if some things don’t just so happen.

what if the significant ripples in your life are the milestone connecting dots that you can only attach a reason to after being through it and having seen the outcome. That every action every cause leads to an outcome, cause an effect.

What if nothing is just a coincidence?

What if it is easier explain that it is by accident, by chance, by random order, by chaos. What if what appears to be random is in fact not random at all. That it serves a significance purpose in itself? Consider that maybe the behavior of chaotic system is an appearance of what is random. Giving the impression that everything is by random. But maybe this randomness is not in fact random at all. That what was pictured to be chaotic has in fact a defined structure.

And really, some things that happen don’t need a reason at all.
