Overrated or Underrated?

May 6, 2009

Somebody once asked me, “Do you think celebs are overrated or underrated?”

Well…

“To say that a celeb is overrated undermines the value and effort he/she puts into his/her work as well as the quality and influence of his/her work; to say that a celeb is underrated places excessive importance on his/her status. ”

is all I can say.

There is no overrated or underrated. Only thing certain is:  A celeb is subject to rating and judgement. In fact to some extent, everyone of us is subject to rating and judgement. Just as we are also the source. I think the more important question to ask is, “Whether overrated or underrated, is it fair or not?” Again, there is no definitive answer to this question.

Be it overrated or underrated, fair or unfair, it lies with the one doing the rating, not the one rated. One still goes about one’s work the same way, with as much pride, dignity, and professionalism. Nothing really changes. The world still goes round, in the same unaffected manner. Everything else that happens outside the individual remains outside the individual and external to the individual. There is “everything” and there is “everything else”.

At the end of the day, what matters. “Celeb” is a term, just like ”manager”, “director”, “doctor”, placed on an individual going about his/her job. It does not matter overrated or underrated,  but the respect deserving of, afforded, and essential to any individual.

Respect is the word. For others. But more importantly, for oneself.

“Celeb” is a frivolous term; I don’t think of myself as a “celeb” first and foremost.

So…

“Do you think you are overrated or underrated?”

is the question I pose back to you.

Frankly speaking, I agree there’s no definitive answer to this question.

Imo, it depends on each one individually, be it “celebs”, “manager”, “director”, or “doctor”. At the end of the day, or month, we just take the salary for our ricebowl. It’s just an occupation, just that we are in different lines.

“favourism”, “connections” plays a big part too.

While some celebs deserve the attention and fame, i can’t quite figure it out for some. This goes the same to every occupation. Eg. A very popular doctor, need not be the best doctor around. =)

If a very popular doctor, need not be the best doctor around. Then, a very popular actor, need not be the best actor …haha…..(caught my hint?)

Elvin – Anyway, glad to know that you don’t see yourself as a ‘celeb’….that means, we can date you for tea….haha

    Cheers!

Honestly, there is no overrated or underrated,I totally agreed there is no definitive answer to this question.

A popular celebrity, may not be the best celebrity around and A not so popular celebrity, does not mean he/she is not a best celebrity…

” THAT QUESTION IS SO LAME ! “

Be it overrated or underrated, as long as one self is happy with his/her role that is playing in life….i tink that is sufficient
One Word “Happy”superceeds all other words

No ground to whether a person is overrated or underrated.
The acknowledgment of one’s efforts lie in the eyes of the beholder.
    ……………………….

Whether or not a person is a mega star, best lawyer, famous chef or genius doctor, he/she is molded and not born to be one – it is all just an occupation.
At the end of the day, they will still have to fulfill their basic needs i.e. eat, sleep n shit.
We can pass criticism, not make judgment – cos we are all born equal to begin with.
Should there be any judgment done, let’s leave it to God then.

    Overrated. Underrated.
    Who to judge?
What’s the meaning of overrated and underrated?
Different ppl have different views and definition of these 2 words.

Actually it is the media and viewers who always deciding so and so are overrated. so and so are underrated.
The most famous you are, the more they will notice you.

But no matter what, i believes tt the most important is doing the best for your job and yourself. =)

“Whether overrated or underrated, is it fair or not?” Again, there is no definitive answer to this question.” True, because it depends on how the person rates someone or himself. And what they are rating about. I find that ratings given by someone else are usually unfair. There are so many factors/areas involved when rating someone. The rater do not seek approval of anyone, nor clarify. It’s judgement.

Yesterday, I started my job for the first time as a ballet pianist for the primary and grade 3 level class. It’s a job that needs a “just do it” mentality, which I’m still improving on. But I know I’m good at sight reading. All I had to do is sight read piano grade 4-6 scores I have not seen before. So, I just kept playing. After the class, my self rating dropped a little, because I played more mistakes than expected but I feel motivated to improve. Since I was engaged to one class per week, I asked the ballet teacher if there are other available ones. Surprisingly, she told me that this saturday afternoon there is grade 3, 5, 8 ballet class. At first I feel like I can do it, then it’s a first time job. Better to take a step at a time. Then reading your post made me think, is she overrating me? Not that I undermine myself..just not ready. Then again, the per hour rate is the same for every grade. Play more difficult piece but still same price? It’s more of they couldn’t get a willing party I think? So I guess I’m not overrated. Feeling purposeful and enthusiastic, I accepted without a blink, forgetting the fact that church service is on saturday. Oh well. hahaha..
To me, it’s better have people “overrating” than underrating. You’ll get better prospects. Although both are unfair judgement people place on oneself. To feel overrated and underrated, I rather not have both.
Most importantly, it’s what you feel about yourself.

Actually just now I wanted to post about this first, who knows you update your blog so fast…

I got back my semester 2 results today. Dissatisfied with my marks. The ratings the lecturers gave me. For now, I feel that it isn’t fair, that I don’t get my assignment comments and to understand about their marking criteria. Unconfirmed results, and already underrated.

The amount of effort put in may not equate the results expected. Such is pain in life.

Thankfully, I’ve withdrawn from saturday ballet class. (Wonder why I forgot to put that in.)

I’m going to church. Better to find solace in God.

it a qus as good as asking you to answer how you think of your own standard or performce by now..
so what do you think? it hard to tell.

people who usually never think they are wrong and therefore never learn after so many years are obviously overrating themself within themself. like you know.. telling themself they are like king n to be respected highly while they are just at the start. they easily fall into this range.

as for underrated, i find such people are like susan boye within the american idol. it only takes a chance to shine themself. when you find them.. they are high up there waving. people who are humble enough to hear others views, brave enough to face up their mistake and learn to be better always.

so which sounds like you more? ya.. it hard to answer. or maybe it non of the above anyway.

Let me pose back to you: “Haha, you are neither underrated or overrated, just right…”
Actually it doesn’t matter, as long you believe that you yourself had done your best, and we as fans will always support you, everything will be fine!
    Jia you~!

Yes, i agree that we like to rate people/things in our lives. It’s part & parcel of life.

BUT, like you said it, it doesn’t matter.
    Different people has different views.
    Just let it be.
