Feeling Tarzan

December 3, 2009

I like this song:

“I gotta feeling…

That tonight’s gonna be a good night.

That tonight’s gonna be a good night.

That tonight’s gonna be a good good night.”

Haven’t felt so positive for a long time. Haven’t felt so positive for a long long time. This song makes me feel positive, full of hope, full of life, full of enthusiasm for what is to come. Be it I were to be surrounded by negativity, that it’s a general negative condition around me, or be it a more positive one, I think I have decided to be positive, I have learnt to be positive. No more outside in but inside out, no more letting the environment affect me but me affecting my world. For some time I have been feeling like this. Like come what may, I’m happy. For the past year, I think. I feel like I’ve grown a bit more than little. I’m surprised by myself too. And a part of it (at least for the second part of the year) would have to be the “Tarzan” character that I played in “Together”; the first part of the year perhaps growing out of adversity and learning to take things in stride, hence adding maturity to thought and attitude. Happier now. More balanced now. Older, that’s why, I think. I wish to think I’m a bit different now. Because I’m feeling a bit different now, it feels.

Recalling… I was really excited when I first got the role. Never mind the papers and magazines reinforcing and reinforcing the idea that it’s the second male lead; never mind the posters later too. Tarzan is a character in his very own right; and in his own right, first, second to none, simply because he is so full of life. I laughed at him and I laughed with him as I read the scripts; I felt for him, his ups then his downs. I knew this was a golden opportunity hard to come by. And I hoped to grab it with both hands. “Life is defined not only by opportunities taken, but opportunities missed.” I hoped and hope this time it’s taken, not missed.

Tarzan has made me a happier person, playing him. Brought me back to simplicity & innocence & truth & clarity & belief. Childhood memories. Child-like qualities of an yet untainted world. Running around in a yellowish tight singlet & big pyjama shorts & loud clogs. Music playing all over the place. People showing emotions, people squabbling, real people. Of the 60s. Naive. It was a happy though tough time for people of a young infant nation trying to establish its own footing, more a happy time. So my father and mother told me; they didn’t need to tell me. Because I could feel it from the way they recalled those memories, and I could feel it from the yellowish photographs they kept.

“Oyi-Oyi-O…”

“Bor… Bor…”

“Don’t call me stupid!” (A fist for you)

“I don’t want to be roasting coffee beans and carrying cups of coffee everyday! I want to fly! I want to see the world!”

To the flair and flamboyance of the 70s. Their love for life, reflected in the colourful and loud costumes, shirt tucked in and tight all the way downward to the extravagant and exaggerated celebration of the bell-bottom pants. Super-duper bell-bottom, super-duper cool and handsome. A-go-go. Celebration of life. Carnivalesque. Not without hardship though. Struggle & Toil. Strength & Character. To make sense of the world around. From small village to small town to big town to big city; from walking to cycling to automobile to railway to ship to aeroplanes. Wrestling times; “Tiger King”. Some things Gained & Some things Lost. Pride & Disappointment; Love & Pain. Hopes Achieved; Hopes Dashed.

80s to fight all over again. For love. For family. For friends. For better.

The very last day of filming… the very last shot as Tarzan… immediately after, I missed him already. I asked myself, “That’s it? I’m not going to be Tarzan anymore, ever again?”

I want it to stay; I hope it’s right.

“I gotta feeling…”

    Hello Tarzan! =D
    Wah! I saw photos! =)

Haha, the song is sang by black eyed peas.

I super love the Bor bor you cuo meh?
    Damn cute!
My mum still commented is it really that people in the old days learning/ take driving tests using toy cars. haha!

1st or 2nd male lead doesn’t matter. As long you really enjoyed your role in the process.
When you are enjoying, viewers will be able to feel it while watching and they will enjoy watching too.

Being the 1st lead, doesn’t mean he/she will be the most seeking attention. Is the way how they act.

Hope you will have more of this type of roles in future! =)
Tarzan is always in your heart!

Your 5th photo is cool! Ancient look =D

I grew up in those days and very scene makes me laugh. The feeling of failing my driving test, my mood is exactly likes yours. Seeing the two women fighting over one man is the usual things in the 70s. Jeanette opening their roadside martial arts stall was the norm in those days. Trying to craft out a business is not easy but if you do it, then you will be rich by now. Gangsters everywhere, policemen were just as bad though some good ones.

So now you know the feelings when your ‘work’ is appreciated, your acting is highly commendable and the audiences start to notice your potentials. This kind of feelings is not what money can buy. This is what all artistes are pursuing after. In Maslow theory, this is what we called ’self-actualisation’, a sudden awakening and a sense of contentment and satisfaction.

You want to have another big hit in the new drama ‘New Beginning’. What is role, good guy or bad guy here.

    Tarzan!!!

I think “bor bor you cuo meh” can be one of the classic lines for Together. haha…I really like the way you keep repeating it. This character really brings me a lot of joy when watching this drama. From the way enthusiasm he showed while watching the car racing, to the way he cheered for the Singapore racer on the tree and the way he “fight” over Jian Hong with Xiao Bei, and many more. It’s only three episodes and you gave us many surprise. Personally, I think you even outshine DYT. Well done!

But then I hope by the time you start filming New Beginning, you can forget everything about Tarzan. Because it will not be appropriate to see traces of Tarzan in your new role.

WOW… I haven’t really watch TOGETHER. Have been busy preparing for my exam. My friends who have channel 8 told me that Elvin Ng’s Tarzan role is funny. Same thing to say here, Elvin’s acting is improved again!
不要叫我笨蛋…! I dun like people call me that too!
It’s really really great that you enjoy being Tarzan for a few months. Although it’s just a few months it’s great to hear from you yourself that you like this role so much, despite of all those negative news.

Yes Elvin gege! You won’t be Tarzan again! But I know the spirit will always be in your mind, right? Just like Buqun, he’s still my idol! Hope to see your performance asap as Tarzan! :)

Believe it or not, my father actually wants to watch this show amongst all the rest of the shows on TV simply because of your epic line. It’s been a long time since I actually seen him enjoy a TV drama so much already… Probably because he’s reminded of his childhood… :)

Hi Elvin, great to hear that you’r still feeling positive despite what the environment brings. Keep that spirit going! Remember that in life, we do not always win or succeed but at least we must try our very best not to be defeated! People can laugh and say what they say, but when you’r truly not defeated from inside, you can be strong and stand tall. All the best!

‘Tarzan’ never fails to make me smile whenever he appears. The sincerity and genuineness he portrays was certainly heartwarming. No matter how innocent he may seem, we can still sense a sense of strong belief he holds somehow..

So glad that you took up this role albeit all the negative judgments/statements smacked on the character way before. I believe you’ve trained really really hard in the gym for the nice build too, looking great no doubt!

You made the character came alive, w/o exaggerating the role. You’ve done well, really. Thumbs up for you! Keep on moving, you’ll definitely SHINE. :)

    Hello,

I’m in love with Tarzan too! Althou Liangyi still holds a very special place in my heart.

Your “gu dai” outfit shows a very different Elvin, and the purple outfit is very retro but i like! SHUAI! =D

Does it really matter who takes on the 1st lead, who takes on the 2nd lead? I believe in every drama, not just the lead is everything. Even thou some contestants in some talent competition might emerge champion, but then most of the time, the 2nd or even 3rd runner up usually take on more projects in the latter. they win in the long run even thou they did not emerge champ then. =)

Not many ppl noe but I spend my 1st 8yrs of life in my grandparents shophouses along telok ayer street until they got demolished. the life there in my vivid memory is just like how the scenes were like in together, whenver i watched together, it somehow brought me back memories. last time i used to grumble to my dad, har… have to go ahgong’s house again ah, so far, so hot leh but then deep inside my heart, i still enjoyed going there afterall despite all the grumblings. =p The feeling of staying there then and HDB now, i guess not many youngsters have the chance to experience it.

We only have one life, so live it the way you want it to be. Everyday, we, ourselves, can choose to spend the day in a happy way or sad way. However, be it happy or sad, we’re still going to spend the day. So why don’t we choose to spend it happily so that the day will not go to waste?

Hope that you will stay happy always..

I am glad to hear and know that you are learning to take things in stride…. This is one aspect that I am learning too….it is not easy ….cos, it is thru maturity and wisdom where one learns to have faith in oneself. No one can be at the top forever, sometimes, we slipped a bit but we learn and get up and move on….as the chinese saying goes “back waves push front waves”….it is OK lah but we all know at the end of the day, it is the “old ginger” that rules …haha….even at the TVB Awards Presentation last night, it was the ’seasoned actor/actress’ won the top accolades…

so, enjoy the process and I am sure you will be ’stronger’. Till we meet soon, take care.

You’ve definitely acted well… Congrats! I The sense of achievement must be remarkable.

Through experiences, situations, mistakes and etc, we gain valuable lessons/ learning chapters. We know how to handle things better. Elvin, continue to be positive. One door closed means another door will be open to you. Continue to let this fire/ passion for acting to keep burning. 加油

    Oyi…Oyi… O XP

I was at the roadshow at level 3. Next to me was a 8 years boy and his mother. The little boy asked his mother, “Where is the bor bor uncle”? Then his mother said, “The one wearing a red coat.” All the children start to notice you now.

You are just like yuwu in the Little Nyonya now. Yuwu ’s phrase was ‘huan wo ji tang’ to Yueniang and your phrase is to express your own disappointment. The difference is every girl starts to notice yuwu, no wonder he is a ‘da ching ren’ but a good one.

That is the power of the scripts. A good script definitely produces a good show because all the casts get into their roles well. Coupled up with the good directors, it becomes an award winning show. Maybe this drama can be an award winning drama for 2010 if it is nominated.

elvin u r really cute and adorable as tarzan. hope they will pair u with jeannette and eelyn more often. pls request NOT TO pair up with joanne peh and felicia chin. u r moving up and i really love your expressions, the way u look at jeannette and when u scold eelyn etc. i think tarzan is your breakthrough. i hope u get best actor award, even overtaking the ever-popular chen hanwei.

It’s simply no doubt that People opts for better improvements.

But still, I thought that you were really cute for your character as “Tarzan”!

Can’t help myself but to smile and giggles whenever “Tarzan” spoke~ LoLx~ All the way go! =)))
