Pitstops & Yardsticks

December 24, 2009

Birthdays become less and less of an affair each year as you grow older. And that’s because you have  slowly come to learn more and more about life.

Birthdays become more like pitstops, markings which highlight each different juncture of your life at constant intervals and which tell you to stop for a while to have a rethink.

Birthdays become more like yardsticks; yardsticks to measure love, value, maturity, intelligence, wisdom, success, achievements, accomplishments, dreams, and importance of the people around you.

Yes, pitstops and yardsticks.

Since young i don’t celebrate birthdays.
For my family, there will be no cakes, no pressies, no wishes.
    It’s just another day.
    Thus i’m used to it.
Slowly when i grew up, it’s still the same, except mum will give me a red packet on my birthdays.
I will have a simple small celebration with my close friends.
That’s all. And I’m easy contented.

Birthday is just a reminder for me that i’m getting one year older and to ponder what i need to do for the next year…

To be frank, when I was much younger, each birthday was a big occassion to my family. they organise birthday parties, gatherings for my frens and relatives.

but after i grew up, i stopped all these cos i felt tt my bday is juz another day. not anything wow to go abt. i don’t want and don’t need big parties. I’ll rather have a simple meal to spend quality time with my close friends and family. that’s enough=)

    i used 2 think birthdays R a very very big deal…until this yr, when i turned 21.
    The feeling was so different.

Is it myself that has matured such that there are more important things than birthdays?

Now, I see it more like…friend’s birthdays r the big deal, and mine is just any normal day…

In the midst of everything, birthdays sometimes can b an excuse to b lAzy for once, relax, meetup with long lost friends…etc..

So..it’s still sort of a special day or more like a special time of the mth..=))

Like you, Elvin – Birthday is a time of reflection for me…usually, I will take leave and spend time alone to reflect on my life, my goals, my dreams. I usually go for a long run/jog to think thru life. As I age…my dreams are seem ‘unachievable’ (it is sad but reality sets in). However, I keep reminding myself that as long as I am still living, there is a possibility …Like the slogan goes, Where there is Elvin, there is miracle. Maybe, you are my guardian angel…haha
Sometimes, if we can don’t bother with pitstops and yardsticks, we may live a happier life.
Saw this beautiful quote at the MRT station …share with everyone ->
“Our greatest glory is not in failing but rising up everytime we fail” – Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Merry Xmas and Happy New Year 2010 to one and all.

When birthday comes every year, it indicates that we are growing 1 year older. In precise, it is a pitstop and yardsticks that made us more mature in thinking and taking actions.
As I grow older, there’s no cakes, no everything… It is just a day when I tell myself, hey, I am 1 year older! This is the day that I was awaiting of every year… Just that simple… :)
Hope u had a pleasant 29th birthday… I still remember the taste of the birthday cake during the gathering… Mmm… :)

    Hi Elvin,

Yes, birthdays have become pitstops when you realise you have grown older year by year, thinking changes as you grow & soon you know you have become much more matured.

Birthday is a day to remind you how lonely you are or how fortunate you are. A birthday is a normal day or a big day is how you choose to look at it. If you are lonely and still choose to think its a big day then u will be miserable? ahh… shouldnt be talkin abt negative things here… haha

Btw Elvin how u celebrated ur birthday??

Birthday means a year older. Age below 20 yearns to grow up to be an adult, to be a man. Age above 21 wishes to return to their younger days, less worries and burden.

But life is a sarcastic game. Let’s just play along! :D

I would say that with each passing birthdays, we expect different things from each passing year. Kids were more excited about presents and teenagers preoccupied with celebrations with friends.

After 21, birthdays really mean nothing maybe just a direct reflection on your goals and aims for the future. U start to set targets for yourself to achieve within a fixed period of time.

By early 30s, some would be busy with family plannings and stuff. Aftterwhich, birthdays are meant to be a day for your kids to surprise you with gifts.

    And the cycle continues…

to be honest, I just turned 20 yesterday. I use to think birthday, only once in 365 days is a big affair. I want everyone to remember, I want everyone to celebrate for me. But after reading your previous post on birthday, I just realised birthdays is when you expect the least, you will actually get more at the end. Just simple wishes from friends makes me satisfied already. Birthday is just an ordinary day when people makes you feel really special. Indeed birthday is a yardstick to prove your another year of existence on earth. thank you Elvin!
