Where’s My Bourgeois Existence?
February 10, 2010“If you want a bourgeois existence, you shouldn’t be an actor. You’re in the wrong profession.” – Uta Hagen.
“How true,” I thought, as I realised for myself today, but not as if I didn’t already know. By “bourgeois existence”, I mean “middle class or middle-upper class”.
“Where’s my bourgeois existence?” proletariatly speaking.
Speak of the irony of looking for a “bourgeois existence”.
Look, I’m not even looking for a “bourgeois existence”; I’m merely looking for a “free-r, more rightful existence, and less cheap”. Get it?
Frankly speaking, and straight-faced. Without pessimism, negativity, or disillusionment. Just some anger, for what’s not right, for a rightful existence.

It is always good to express anger out rather than keeping it to yourself. It’s a form of de-stressing.
hm…. quite a contradict u r, isn’t it?
He’s not contradictory, honesty and anger can co-exist. You just don’t understand him.
I cannot understand your feeling right now. All I can say is that to be an actor or actress is not easy. You got all your emotion entangle up between fiction and reality. Doing some scenes that are not pleasant and yet forced to do it under someone else commands.
Yet it is better to enjoy what you are doing right now. If one day technology can replace actors and actress, there will be no demand for this line of profession. It is coming soon, sonner than you can take cover. Nothing is impossible for a change in the near future.
So do a little more filming and be proud of your production. Think about three two things.
1) No one put new wine in a old wine skin. The reason is when the new wine expands during fermentation, the gas will burst the old wine skin. So in acting, you need to fit into a new role everytime a new drama sprung out.
2) No one patch an old garment in a new piece of cloth, The reason is the old patch of garment may tear and the whole cloth is damaged. So in acting, you cannot remain the same nature, character and style to fit every new drama, then you are not creative and will not shine out differently from the old drama.
3) When you make a clay pot or vase, you are the potter and you decide the type and shape of the pots. So this is the lesson on the potter and the clay. Every new drama is in your hands to make it the way you want yourselves to look like. I guess maybe you say the scriptwriter determines ‘you’ as he writes it the way he wants you to be. But it is still your job to bring out the character of the ‘scripted character’.
I have nothing to say about your drama, try your best.

I believe if you have already choosen the path in the limelight, you shld have been aware of all the pros and cons?
Thats why people always say the entertainment industry is dark.
It’s your own choice rite? You chose this direction rite? It’s a take it or leave it thing.
could you define “rightful existence” or is it defined by something mid-class to lower class? not a lit student, but yeah, someone who enjoys reading.
“If you want a bourgeois existence, you shouldn”t be an actor. You”re in the wrong profession.”-Uta Hagen.
Yes its true.Showbiz is dark and complicated.
Im sure you already know!
A nice person like you shouldn”t stay in there. So i hope
if your contract ended, you can consider other jobs.
Finding jobs outside is hard but being a celebrity is even more hard because everyone can see what happens and maybe your private life will be openly to public.
This is my opinion and reminder to you!
So sorry, not smart enough to understand your post.
Go with your feelings.
If most, esp your bosses think you are good, you probably are. So, don’t let others sway you.
If sponsors think you are good, you certainly are …never be bothered by those ‘small people’ who are out to suan you …. Guess, in this entertainment line, you can possibly win everyone.
ya at less a rightful existence. dont need to say be in which ever class. everyone got anger.. just whats the level on it and how you should show it is depending on condition and have in mind your own status. the best is dont show it only if it truely needed.
just what do you gain by showing anger to others? your view? is it needed? is the other person worth to be teach the lesson and be better from you?
some things or people are just not worth to be angry with. only if you love them enough to want better for them. n to what i learn, even for people you love.. that you should keep your anger.. bcoz overall.. HUMAN USUALLY CANT FACE THEIR WRONG.
use other ways to turn things over than anger.
From an artist point of view, rightful existence means living n breathing for ur art. That becomes ur way of life. Not quitting when facing difficulties, holding on ur dreams no matter how big or small, not saying ur done with it. It becomes part of u. And because of that bourgeois existance status or whatever. Is not important. Realistically not many ppl r willing to be “starving artists” in this materialistic world. I’m glad for those who r “starving artists” becos these ppl hold their art in more value than money. Without them, the world would be quite a boring place. It’s abt u liking acting as an art. Seriously, r u like them?
it’s ok that i dunno ur answer. I understand to be in the acting industry is tough. If u like it, n is ur passion, good for u. :)
It’s good that u show your anger,if u keep it to urself u will be stressed.Being a actor/actress is very tiring, for me.It’s ur choice whether u want to be in entertainment industry or not.Being in Entertainment Industry is sometimes good and sometimes bad.Anyway,Happy New Year,Elvin.
Jia you, Elvin! =) This path must be tiring at times.
Try not to keep things to yourself and talk to someone u r comfortable and trustworthy?
Take good care dude. ^_^
Keep smiling!! =)))))))
Wow, just came across your blog. I’m one of your fans and after reading some passage of your posts, I’m overwhelmed. So you aren’t just a pretty face but your usage of the English language is fantastic too! Anyway, be it you are an actor or in some other profession, there’s always ups and down, advantage and disadvantages. Ultimately it’s in our hands to try for a win-win situation. ;)
Gambatte dude!!
Just be yourself. :)
