“I didn’t Choose to be Blindfolded but I’m not Blind”

March 20, 2010

I used to believe in justice and equality; they used to be the pillars of my existence.

No more.

I think I’ve changed quite a bit these recent years. No longer so stubborn, no longer so steadfast in my views; only occasionally, steadfastness might not be a virtue.

Life is unfair. Let’s face it. I no longer insist that the world should be fair and just and equal. My world view has changed. Life is fair only when you recognise that it is unfair and accept that it is unfair.

Justice and equality still are the most important qualities in  my life and how I wish for the world to be. But I’ve learnt to realise and accept that they often do not present themselves and are most often manifested in their lack.

As long as these ideas stay in you. Never mind the external you cannot change. After trying that is.

Too bad, take it or leave it, I’m afraid, sometimes.

I used to believe in justice and equality; they used to be the pillars of my existence.

And they still are.

Structural ignorance is a strange thing that blinds you and then opens your eyes.

I have never believe in justice and equality.

Althou i cant deny that they are v impt to me too.

    But life is always unfair.

If there is, why is there so many tragedy life stories out there.

Why do i see many ppl begging?

Why do i see so many problems occuring to some ppl.

Why are there ppl always full of revenge and unhappiness and evil thoughts?

The rich gets richer, the poor gets poorer.

The strong gets stronger, the weak gets weaker.

    How sad isn’t it?

But then I like your sentence, “I didn’t choose to be blindfolded but I’m not blind.” I strongly agree.

Don’t stop believing in your beliefs and very soon, one day, you will start to feel life is just and fair again.

Trust me, I’ve been through this stage before.

Like you said, life is unfair. That is why there are systems in our society to tip the balance.

I used to believe and hung on tightly to the beliefs and work towards it, but the results were unsatisfactory and frustrating.

It’s important to believe in justice and equality but there is a also need to strike a balance with it. So I’m bundling up a set of old and new to learn to see the world. =))

    Hi Elvin
First and foremost, my heartiest congratulations to you for being in the Top 20 Popular Male Artistees. Much as you would not take it as a ‘given’, I am sure you are heartened that viewers out there do know you and acknowledge you for your acting efforts. Jia You.
I am not sure what prompted this blog of yours? Sounds a bit ‘vengeful’ … I dun want to deduce anything from here – as to whether it is wrt to worklife, familylife or the recent star awards nominations.
In this world, there is no such thing as ‘fair’… though in our National Pledge, we say ‘ …based on justice and equality ….” likewise so in whatever we do …. as long as our conscientious is clear, we live and sleep peacefully at night. Sometimes, we still need the pull from our social networks and bosses to bring us up…that’s life – you scratch my back and I scratch yours. I hope I do not sound mercenary …well, that’s life and how the game is being played. Those who knows the rule, rule the game!

    my views

I think There is no “equality” exist in this world. Justice?? I do not think this word holds any meaning to it. I am speaking from experience. There are so many many different people exist in this world, and all have different mentality, thinking, views, behaviour, character, personality, principles, opinions and so on. No one can please no one. Not everyone goes by the book, not everyone knows what is right and wrong, not everyone thinks maturely, sensible and so on. Not everyone upholds justice. Even some “sinners” can be left scotfree. So justice??? We can choose to uphold justice yeah, but others might not.

I am just -sigh- that majority is always at the “black side”. “white side” is always the minority. As long as you are living in a world with human, you will never have “justice”. Human are scary and I mean it.

there are so many things happening around us everyday which are outta our control but life still has to go on. It’s not how we want to lead our lives (cos life is unfair) we are not the only human in this world. We just have to remind ourselves to stay positive, do our own part, others are outta our control. Like that we will feel better then… We cant change the facts, but we can change our mentality though i know its hard but still gotta try.

Look like you are off-focus. Pressured by the SA Awards Nite. Just present yourself smart and handsome and leave everything to the judges. Must take it lightly though it is like a report-card giving out time to students, all things are in the hands of the judges and your fans.

I have been voting regularly for you everyday as Tarzan. How to vote for Sato, can only vote once. Cheers.

Life is unfair because we think that it is unfair. Humans are all vain. They always don’t seems to be satisfied with life and thought that life is always unfair because things doesn’t really goes their way or not belongs to them. I am also a human, and sometimes I do think that life is unfair but I feel that life could only be unfair when we want it to be. Saying is easy but when it comes to do it, its totally heaven and hell distance. You cannot control how things comes along into your life, but you can do whatever that is fair to yourself without regrets (my motto), learn to appreciate even little things that comes to you and maybe in this way, you would be able to find out that actually little things in life somehow also create an impact apart of your life. And you won’t feel that you are blind even when you are blindfolded.

Hey elvin, terribly sorry I have to post this here… but where did you get your cap you wore for the Thong Chai Charity donation-request commercials? The dark grey, graphite looking one, with a rectangular plate on the front. I hope you do reply, thanks a bunch!

  26. Nizze, on March 27th, 2010 at 10:11 pm said:

Well ….. if life is really fair there will not be any discriminations, inequalities, disparities, exploitations, bullyings going on in this world…. So life is never fair. Period.

We have to accept that unfairness is something that exists… like the air we breathe, it will always be around us and it will not go away….

I’ve been through an ugly phase in life; I was exposed to injustice, bullying, accusations, exploitations.. basically it is the dark side of human nature at play. Initially I was very confused and lost.. I kept questioning, why are things like that, why do pple behave in this way.. where is the fairness in things…

Soon this confusion gave way to frustration, which turned into anger. However, after awhile, I stopped being so angry because I realised that we can neither change nor stop all these unfairness around us and most times justice may not be ultimately served.

To a large extent, there are many factors in the external environment which are beyond our control. Since we cannot change or influence justice/equality in the the larger environment, the only thing we can work on is ourselves.

What WE can do is to make sure we do not lose sight of these good values and try to apply them in our daily lives as closely as possible.

    Cheers

Insist on persistence but not insistence. Because people differ in what they believe. Because people differ in perspectives. Because the world is round. Because there are expectations and questions.

Perhaps justice, equality, fairness will come together when we all turn to dust.

  28. Feather Blue, on March 29th, 2010 at 1:17 am said:

just the day we were born life already is unfair.. guess it natural. some are born rich and some not just poor but not fully structure or even any smarter.

justice and euaqlity just not real at all, sadly.
i see life as like a uno game who got a bigger brain and so who wins, not who are paying more attentions or who got better cards in hand.

whoever got a bigger brain to move around tells what is fairness of their view to others and there is always someone better out there. things just dont happen when it turns in a cycle. =)

I really really do not want or wish to be in a place where peoples are having scheme against each other & peoples who are not really being true to you…
why am I so vulnerable & fragile…why do I get hurt & upset so easily…why do I feel so insecure & lost…why can’t I get used to the dark side of the world…why do I feel helpless about it…why do I feel so afraid…

everything in life is a lesson to be learnt, and those so called injustice and unequality are tests to our beliefs, to see if you will give in ultimately.

ppl tend to give up for convenience.

tough ppl hold on cuz tough times don’t last. :)

    Hi friend,
As you wrote “you come with nothing and you probably leave with nothing” on 31 March 2010, this shows power of justice and equality of nature. Easy to believe but difficult to know and practice. That why knowing is more important than believing. Life is fair or unfair is not important but we need to do good or virtue deeds standing honest, understanding and kind ground (mind).
