your life is an epic story
March 31, 2010i used to like epic movies, movies about war, about the last day of the world, about death and separation and life, tragic romances, romantic tragedies, movies that were titanic, and more importantly, movies about humanity, that put the human spirit to the test in the face of struggle and adversity, the power to overcome, the fight, brought to the limits, intense human emotions, emotions that were larger-than-life. precisely because they often do not exist in real life, hence i needed to feel, to feel more, more, emotions, something that was larger than life itself.
now, i have to say i’m quite different, things have changed. i realised that epic feelings can also be found in smalltown romances, in non-epic settings, in everyday life, the smallest and simplest things in life, and i’m glad to have felt that. epic feelings need not only be found in epic settings, but also in little, heartfelt gestures like your mum sending you to the door and waving goodbye silently when you go off to work, the wake-up calls you get in the mornings afraid that you’ll be late for work, the bride and groom on stage thanking their families on their big day, a simple message from a friend to ask how’s your day and to wish you a smooth-sailing day ahead.
no longer just matters about death and life, nor the last or precious moments, but about everyday living, each little intimate moment you share with someone else, and that’s epic enough. i still like epic movies, but i’ve also learnt to appreciate and love the little epic moments in our lives, the romantic comedies, the smalltown romances, the family dramas that play out.
my life is an epic story, still playing out.

epic need not be written in capital, or bold letters but in the smallest and most insignificant of fonts; yet they are epic, in the manner in which they were written.
when you realise that life can so easily and so instantly desert one, you want to know that it had been all worthwhile.
a right attitude, an open heart, and lots of magnanimity.
little epic moments, epic little life.
a mere epic.
and merely so.
you come with nothing and you probably leave with nothing; what you leave behind is a legacy, epic in its own right.
Little things in life can sometimes means a lot too. :)

I enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things. Don’t be sad because it’s over, be happy because it happened.
Sometimes little things can be neglected when in fact they are the most heart warming.
A small gestures, well wishes etc actually mean alot.
We don’t need to wait for big things to happen to make us happy. Little things that happen every min and sec might be bring you a smile on your face and warm your heart. =)

i guess that is your PC where you pen down your epic blog. well, guess everyone’s life is epic in its own way/manner …memorable to the people involved. i can see 2 trophies …your beloved STAR AWARDS POPULAR MALE ARTISTEE, i suppose. This year, you will probably add 1 or even 2 more to the collection. At least, your epic story is read and remembered whereas ours are only with us, probably never told. Take heart, and certainly life is great (thou for me, it is not that so as yet).

WOW! Elvin your room is so neat and tidy, unlike my brother’s. Is hard to maintain a room in such a neat way, how did you manage it? I also have a consider messy room at certain part. =)
Take everyday as a simple and relaxing day, though there might be some obstacle happening sometime.

Moving towards an unfulfilled destiny is an epic. An adventure of its own right. Life is exciting. Towards the unknown. Towards the notion of you’ll never know. Some of the things I’ve let go, I wonder if it’s right. I guess I’ll just put them in the grey areas.

i realiezed that if i blamed others for what provoked anger or irritation or jealousy within me, i was resisting an opportunity to learn a lesson intended for me.
the lesson would recur in my life, with greater intensity and suffering.
to me, the essential point was simply this: by taking personal responsibility for what went on within me and by getting to know myself and the root causes of my negative reactions, i could literally minimize recycling in my life.
by refusing to blame others for my less than loving responses, i could dramatically cut down on the hurts of life. i’d be playing by the laws of nature, so nature would support me. i’d be awake to the truth of the way life really works, so life would hand me greater rewards.
i always love epic.. to me they are not what life or which ever. just most of the epic movies are happy movies and i like of coz. i hate ghost movie the most.
i agree with what you said in the end.. no one is born bring something or can go off with something. when everytime this sentance pass my mind. life just feels like a story. and when i think of this.. being with a love one is like reading his story n is a book that you never will want to close the book till it reach the end.
is like we all got a passport being here.. one fine day it’ll be stamped.. and all we can have or can give are just memories.
30 years.. half way through the stroy book maybe?

I always believe in this saying: “It’s not how much you have got in your life. It’s how much you have appreciate and cherish through out your life.”
For the little things around us are so small, we may have just forget about them or take them for granted. However if we attend to them with care, we will realise how all these little things around can make our life as wonderful and contented. Little things make wonders. :)
Well, i became emotional when i read this. Tears started to fill my eyes, esp the part on mum wakin me up, afraid tat i might b late for work n sendin me to the door, wishing goodbye n closin the door for me. Yet at times i tend to overlook on all these small concerns. In our culture, we dun really hug n kiss our family goodbye in our daily life bt yet now i do feel the urge to do so! Bt then again i think i might give my mum a very big shock… Abt epic i feel its the impression we had previously fr stories, movies etc to let us think tat epic should b a big thing. Bt as year goes by, at e age we r now, we tends to understand epic in small scale living too. Mayb its our expectation tat became lowered mayb big epic only happen in stories n movies. Mayb mayb…

I just saw a feature on Elvin in NUS’s April publication, The Ridge. And one point in the article stood out because it both surprised and amused me=X In it, he said he’s “very bad with technology” so much so he even once asked his prof whether he could write out his n thousands word essay instead of typing it out. Speaking of which, it’s been a while since I actually handwritten an essay…hmm.
So I could hazard a guess why he doesn’t ever comment here…and I don’t suppose he has a facebook account either right…cos I saw some of you asking to communicate with him directly on fb. I’m not sure.

Elvin, this is so well-written. You’ve said what I’ve felt all along, and made my principle in life, and now, the core of my profession.
To appreciate the little things in life which are so hard to find, because they are so hard to come by. Yet, the little things in life, and the littlest of them all especially, are the most epic of them all. Because the littlest little things take the greatest sensitivity and care to notice and make, and to some extent, muster the greatest courage to perform and give.
“If you cannot do great things, do little things greatly.”
That’s what the Siddhārtha Gautama Buddha, Mother Teresa and other great saints through our long passage of time have done. It’s time we noticed.
