Life’s Many Races

May 16, 2010

Some races are a sprint while others stretch over a longer distance. Some require speed while others need stamina and perseverance. But they all have something in common though; strength of character, that is, to come through.

Often we think it’s a race with others, or it could be a race against time, but mostly though it’s a race with yourself, against your own expectations and ambitions. You could see many lanes and many runners or you could see yourself and your lane.

You could be running with a pacer; you might be running at someone else’s pace; often though you just need to run at your own pace. At times you find yourself leading the pack; other times you fall behind to play catch-up. Some make the finishing line; some fall short.

Sometimes it’s a tortoise-race; sometimes it’s a hare-race, sometimes it’s a rat-race; sometimes it’s a horse-race.

I say:

Let’s take us to the races!

    wah! Awesome photos! =)

In life, there are loads of races ahead before we will reach the ending. No matter how long it takes, as long you completed every single race, you are a winner. Cos we are competing with ourselves. =)

Yeap, we often think we’re racing against other people, but yet, we’re actually racing against ourselves!
But i feel that i’m actually racing against time. lol.
I also will think i’m actually racing against the ever-changing world. LOL.
Whatever it is, we must all strive hard for our goals!
    Go for it! :D

    Smile always! ;) (L)
    Lots of love,

    Hello Elvin

This is the first time i am visiting your blog.
I totally agree with what you said
Life is indeed full of many races
And i guess, and i believe, the most difficult challenge is to overcome yourself coz if you could overcome your own barrier, you are a winner =)

Just strive for the best =)

Nice blog post with great pics!! ^_^

Yup I agree that it’s not a race against time or other people. The most important one is the race against ourselves. Each of us has our own expectations and ambitions. And therefore, we should go for it. No matter how hard it will be, we have to complete the race. =)

And lastly, never give up! =)

Mostly people will tend to raise against others. Jus like a student will tend to compare marks with his classmates. To me, it’s a good sign though. It’s a kind of competition so that it will motivate ourselves to strive harder. On the other hand, some may find stress. When stress come into place, it’s not a good sign. It might be we force to hard ourselves to reach our goal. How to find the line whereby we know where to stop so that it will not reach the stress point? I think not many people can do that. I think it is not a matter to win the race or not, it’s the 过程. We should learn to enjoy the 过程. Whether winner or not it’s not so important. 尽力就好 :-) Agree Elvin ?

In Life, sometimes the paths we take are long and hard and some are short and easy but remember the paths which are long and hard are the ones that lead to the most beautful views.

U only got one life… live it the way that you wont regret in future.

So Elvin, which path do you prefer? =)

Elvin, you have a warm and wise philosophical side which is growing. You might like to read the reflections at the Dharmafarer website: http://dharmafarer.org. All the best: may the sun always shine brightly your career and dreams.
Whether life is half empty or half full,, we should fill it up warmly.

Yes, just do better than yourself and you are a success. Though sometimes racing with other people is good too. This will allow us to keep up and not let people go ahead of us… =)

A wise man knows that he should not be ‘racing’ with others. Read in a book that it is not ‘advisable’ to attend alumni gatherings cos, most people end up comparing their progress with their peers’ achievements… and most people are there to ‘show off’ which ‘catching up’.
In fact, we should not also be racing ourselves..cos we may push too hard and end up hurting our health. We can set a goal and move towards it at our own pace. That may seem passive but I think that’s what is meant by ‘tortoise’ race -> I may be slow, but I know I am progressive towards my dreams.

Thank you for gracing our events. Hope you had fun!

Well said Wai Yee, it’s the process of the race (过 程) that matters. Try living up to our own expectations rather than being pressurized by others’ expectations of us.

what i know is no matter it a sports race that i’ve did in schools or in life.. the only thing i look at is my goal.

it is just my goal and ways to get there. i will try my very best and only till i had finished the race that i would know which place i’ve got.

for as long as you’ve try your very best, it doesn’t matter which place you’ve got.

  22. wai yee, on May 20th, 2010 at 2:42 pm said:

    Thanks Charlee :)

Actually said is easier than done. In this competitive world, all of us is rushing and rushing. Who can jus sit down and relax ? I think we all are very stressful…….Everyone is racing. Early in the morning we already start our race, i.e trying to rush to work, trying to squeeze into the MRT and so on……..We should learn to sit down and enjoy the process of the race. I think this is important !

Hey photos… happy to see that…
To me, I choose to run slowly, relaxing. With that slow pace, I can see the beautiful scenes and views beside me. Also, I won’t hurt myself for being to strenous…
Sometimes, go slower, and u will find something unusual but special.
