He must be feeling very empty, that’s why he IS unbalance!

    我很 enjoy “No Limit”.

Even if you’re way older than him, come on, don’t think you can shoot him by saying he’s naive…. unless you’re once in the acting industry and have gone through think and thin. Otherwise, put yourself in other people’s shoes before you make any comment. Any words can just hurt one’s pride/feeling if you weren’t here to support but to discourage one.

    1) Elvin didnt point out spell out who it was, why are there people too guilty or too free to acknowledge and lash back? what if it’s a misunderstanding and it wasnt even talking bout u? what if it’s entirely frictional? why must read so much into it?
    2) He wasn’t scolding and badmouthing anyone,
he was merely expressing frustration/unhappiness and very normal rants at his OWN BLOG… like what you and I would do in our blogs/ msn or texting.. nothing childish bout it.. I mean, are u a saint who nvr complains/grumbles about other people?
    3) knowing Elvin, this could really b a spur of a moment thingy.. not delibrate no ill intention no bad blood… it is just reporters trying to FRY up some news or bad blood i suppose? so let’s not get manipulated by them and hoohaa over it =)

:: my words of comfort ::

personally, i am a sensitive person by nature, and i do let small things bother me in huge volumes, so its unimaginable HOW u feel if you were to be humiliated in PUBLIC, withnessed by thousands…. its utterly UNACCEPTABLE.

i am sorry u have to experience the humiliation not once, but twice over, that simply tells me you were stepped upon not once, but twice over… i’d say this is highly inappropriate.

i share your pain, elvin, and i am GLAD u are blogging about this, and make known your feelings about this matter. you are doing the right thing expressing how you feel, after all, this IS your blog, you can say what and how you feel, and your feelings should definitely NOT be trampled on!

take heart, elvin, stay strong and do report this, if you could *to ensure any future unnecessary tension or/and humiliation*

take care of yourself, elvin, eat well, keep your chin up, k? .<

this matter should be brought to human resources or whatever they call it in singapore, to make known of the humiliation u endured…

    i feel you, elvin.

if u could, bring this matter up to get it resolved, so that you will not experience any future humiliation, especially in PUBLIC! it is a big sign waving *NO RESPECT* and yes, this is NOT appreciated.

    Elvin,

I must say that you seemed to have over reacted to the entire situation. If you indeed have a grievance against Guo Liang, a person with integrity would have approached Guo Liang and clarify the situation with him versus posting your unhappiness on your blog and insinuating the Guo Liang has no integrity. You know full well that your fans will take your side no matter what the real situation is. This is highly unfair to the other party so I was happy to see that Guo Liang had the guts to post his comments on your blog to clarify. This has however put to light your pettiness and lack of consideration for others.

I am neither a fan of yours nor Guo Liang. I am making these comments in the hope that you will learn from the experience and be a real professional. Instead of blaming others for everything that went wrong, think about what your developmental areas are – e.g. the ability to think and speak on the spot – something you clearly need to learn from Guo Liang and others and also to have the courage to confront someone whom your truly believe had slighted you versus trying to garner your fans’ support in attacking your ‘offender’.

    Best of luck!

Well.. people from different countries have different way of expressing themselves, their way of views. For example, people from Western Sides, they are more open, anything can be humoring, anything can be jokes. People from Chinese, they too have another kind of communicating. Though i have not communicate with any Western people except China people, I’m also got affected by them easily, resulting quitting my part-time job. I have to say the way they talk they don’t think of others, likewise even when they offended people, they also don’t know or maybe don’t even give a damn. But when things blew up, people turn to them, trust me, they are so ” clever ” and effective in twisting how other people feel, another words making themselves maciam the right one. That was 1 thing i knew, therefore i don’t argue with those people, = wasting time. So yeah, that ” huai ren ” say till ownself so innocent, that’s enough already, still want teach people how to think or how to react ? Save that man.. you should think about yourself why people dislike you first before you teach other people. Because firstly, you offended people. Elvin never even say who was the ” huai ren “, you came up and comment, why didn’t you consult him privately ? Anyway, i’m not Elvin’s fan or anything, i cannot stand how he react to Elvin’s ” huai ren “. You have NO RIGHTS to tell Elvin what is ” huai ren “.

Anyway, that’s the way i look at China people, yes some may be good, but never try to argue with them, because they are forever ” innocent “.

next.. i just like the way elvin behave, like an innocent boy using that ‘huai ren’ word to describe, it feels 小孩子气~ and definitely i feel he is just being harmless like a kid~

    Hi Elvin,

First of all, I just wanted to say that I’m a fan of yours from America. I used to live in Singapore from 1996 to 1999, and recently I started watching Singaporean dramas again. I’ve seen several dramas of yours, including the recent , and I think you’re an awesome actor. :)

I have also been following your blog, and I really like reading your posts because they are really deep and thoughtful yet simple at the same time. I actually read this post a few days ago, and after I read it, I was shocked and I felt bad for you. I looked at the character descriptions in , and I did actually figure out who the 坏人was. I was actually concerned if he was going to see your post because I know that he has a blog as well. Then today, I saw the headlines on Channel News Asia… and he did read your post.

I’m not going to take sides on who is right or wrong, or comment on the content of the post itself, but I wish that you would not have posted this entry at all. Although you certainly have the right to express your opinions on your own blog, but I feel that as a public figure in the entertainment industry, you should not have discussed specific details about your work (in this case, your discontent with another actor) on your blog because everyone can see it and figure out who he is. I’m sure you don’t mean any harm by your post and hopefully this matter will be put to rest soon.

    Best wishes,
    Christine

Though your fans could be more vocal in defending your stand, it does not means that you are doing the right thing.

When you are a public figure, you should be more mature in your voicing out your opinion, claiming to be innocent like a child could not justify the harm done to the other party.

Though as what Guo Liang had explained “在几分钟的时间里,身为主持必须把握节目效果、时间、嘉宾的访问均衡等等问题”, but not at the expense of mis-interpreting elvin’s answer, since GL himself knows that there is a time constraint & being a host, he shouldn’t anyhow put his words into elvin’s mouth,
why he had to said that “目中无人” & “斌辉,他没把你放眼里啊” in response to elvin’s answer?
Now putting & pushing all the blame to elvin saying that the question is already make known to him earlier.
Honestly speaking, don’t think there is anything wrong with Elvin’s reply, “there’s no rabbit” cause he only
wants to compare & compete with himself. The problem is, is there really a need for GL to said that?
Since in GL’s reply, he knows how to “teach” elvin to add-on (which he didn’t gave a chance for elvin
to really do so), why can’t he said something that sounds nicer instead?
If those peoples who think elvin is being petty by penning down his thoughts about GL in his blog,
what about GL’s reply? Instead of clearing the “misunderstanding” that he had claimed,
he sounds really sarcastics in his reply.
There is a limit to “产生喜剧效果”, not to be too overboard & over-do it…
& is it really a “玩笑” in the first place?

There are many things that are not said, not known, behind the scenes, in their minds. What everyone is seeing and hearing is merely that on the surface, albeit with each their own agenda. As much as everyone is criticising either of them for what they have done or are doing, perhaps, we should be circumspect in our critique. Simply because we do not know the challenges or the struggles they face in their industry. Whether the matter should not have been brought up in the first place is questionable? However, drawing attention to the matter could potentially resolve the underlying problem(s) in the industry, highlighting to the management the struggles these celebrities face. A large part of good corporate governance depends on the openness of management to encourage “whistle blowing” and open communication. Has the management demonstrated such openness in addressing the concerns of their staff? It takes courage to address a matter, the courage to draw attention and hopefully address the matter but also potential flak and scrutiny. In the end, they are answerable to themselves and their conscience.

Maybe he should ask himself if he is indeed so “professional” as he claims to be, that he does everything a host should do, that includes being insensitive to others just so that he gets the “effect” the show requires. If that’s the way a good host should be, I guess he ought to look at some of the hosts in china and taiwan who are able to communicate effectively with the guests on their show in a way that achieves the desired effect and yet sensitive enough to a fellow human being. Or does he expect everyone to respond the way he “expects” otherwise he will not be able to respond in the way he hopes to… He might was well write scripted dialogues for all his variety shows and programmes and pass them to his guests. A good host should be able to make do out of any situation or any type of celebrity or personality that appears on his show.. Maybe he has been too sheltered in the cosy environment this place currently offers him, thinking he is the best there is in this small pond.. Wonder who is the frog in the well.

I believe that no one, in his right frame of mind, would want to write something that is not true, especially against someone who is a well-known veteran host/actor in the same company in which both are working for & especially he himself is a promising young actor.

Why would he want to jeopardize his career in this manner. What I believe is that he must have been bullied many times secretly by this so-called senior and felt injustice.

Frankly, it is common in any work place to be bullied or taken advantage of because of one’s personality, especially when one is humble, not-so-vocal, easy-going, kind and sincere.

The senior would probably not have thought that his actions to this young actor would be worth a mention in his blog which subsequently was brought to public attention by the media.

The way I see it, it is really a case of a bully by a so-called senior by way of making things difficult for him.

The senior should seriously do some self-reflection of his actions toward his fellow colleague in light of this exposure. It might be a dark side of his character which he himself might not even aware of.

    My advice to:

    Elvin,
Now that you have let go the baggage, move on and concentrate on your acting. Your acting has definitely improved a lot. Am sure with your look & smiling personality and improved acting, you will win many fans in time to come. However, spare a moment to think of how to handle such bullies in future in a manner that is firm, professional and diplomatic. Am sure there are many of such bullies in your work place.

Talents will not shine overnight. They have to be given time & opportunities to polish their skills. Pornsak, Charlyn & Lee Teng are such examples. They have improved tremendously.

    GL,
In the light of this matter, you should seriously do some self-reflection of your actions toward this fellow colleague of yours. It might be a dark side of your character which you might never have been aware of.

It is really sad that having read widely so many fine chinese literary books, it did not make you a better person.

With your wealth of hosting & acting experience, you should impart them and provide guidance to your junior colleagues, especially the weaker ones, in a respectful & humble manner.

Respect, whether from your colleagues, family or friends, has to be earned.

It is not acquired by expecting them to have the same level of efficiency or intellectual as you or by passing sarcastic remarks but by respecting others’ opinions, providing guidance and impart knowledge in a professional yet humble manner.

Being a bully to gain respect from others will never work. It will create resentment instead.

You have been given many opportunities by your company to polish your hosting/acting skills and benefited with a comfortable life in this land, I hope you can pay it forward by helping your fellow junior colleagues to progress.

(If any of GL friends is reading this article, do forward this article to him. It will help him to be a better person)

    - Wisdom gives you meaning to your colour.
    - Happiness brings warmth to the colour.

This is the kind of world we live in everyday. Some people are lucky enough not to encounter these kind of crappy fools while others are less fortunate. I had been through and I think I would still meet a lot of these people for the rest of my lives. Of course, when I meet these kind of people, I have choices to make on how to react to these kind of people. A courageous person would fight back like you do. I do think that what you did is very right. The other choice would be to keep quiet and pretend not to hear what these people are talking about. But through experience, more often than not, these people would become worse and talk even more as if they are really right. Eventually, it would still become unbearable if you have to face this person every day at work or at home. Its right to fight back. But I know many people who are not fortunate enough to fight back because the moment they do, they lose their livelihood. Life is pathetic, really. I really think that there is no justice nor happiness in this world at all.

There is nothing wrong with lingo, as long as it’s not vulgarity. If host dislike our lingo, then why work here in Singapore? He may go back to China if he wants, see where he stands there.
Guo Liang, I think you better as a veteran host, be tactful with your choice of words and do not use your China slang to tekan Singaporean with Singapore Lingo. You may end up offending alot of people.

I believe he should have been more sensible, keep this under wraps and approach the relevant people or higher authorities(Mediacorp management ) if he does not like the way GL is treating him. At least they could have talked over it peacefully.

GL is also not free from fault. If he had that little bit of empathy and put himself in Elvin’s shoes, he would not have kept making things difficult for him. Therefore, he need to reflect back on his actions as well.

In a nutshell,I really thank Elvin for stirring up a bit of controversy in this otherwise boring local entertainment scene.:)

    I am wondering,
while a handful of people feels that Elvin shouldn’t raise his concern on his feelings on his blog,
Then why was Guo Liang given an authority to pass sacarstic remark directly on air? Not very professional I feel.

A person comment on blog, you have a choice to read or see. But Sacarsm on air, is already for everyone to see. Guo, are you able to see the diff ? You have directly stepped on the tail of someone in front of everybody.

Guo, instead of typing a long ‘mandarin compo’ that we see as being ‘defensive’, wiser for you to type a ‘letter of apology’ to extend your sincerity and will to stay in mediacorp.

We accept and welcome PRs, and naturally PRs should learn to accept our languages and Cultures.

    My two cents worth…

Yes, I do think it would have been nice for guoliang to say he is sorry to Elvin.. not for making those remarks but for upsetting him… I guess he was also not aware that Elvin was so upset about the things he heard.

For me, I feel GL was probably making those remarks because it is part of his job to do so…

It is great tat Elvin finds courage to take a stand:) It is great tat Elvin expresses how he feels and doesnt pretend or hide or be a hypocrite. I give you a thumbs up for this one!:)

I guess though, a more valuable form of communication might be to talk to Guoliang direct and tell him personally how you feel :) He wouldnt say all those nasty things if he knew how you felt about them I am sure.. That, though, might take more courage than ranting on your personal blog…hehe ;) But I think your feedback to GL would be very precious to him too.

Like i always tell my 5 year old son when he complains about what his friends do to him.. if you dun tell other people how you feel, they wouldnt know it and you cannot blame them sometimes for reacting in a certain way.. because they really did not know that they hurt you.. and they really dun want to hurt you…Most people are not BAD PEOPLE who are going all out to hurt everyone around them ;)

GL has never been known for being malicious.. and there seem no reason for him to get started now..

Perhaps if Elvin did not take his remarks personally, this might not have happened as well. When we take things personally, we are making a judgement not only on ourselves but also on the person who made the remark.. in making the other person a bad guy, we become a bad guy too… :( Sometimes we think people dun like us but that may not be true at all ;)

Anyway, Elvin, Jia you!:) I wish you peace and may you find a beautiful ending for this one.. afterall in the showbiz, one more fren is better than one more enemy:)

I think you have great potential in Media Corp. However, sometimes to be successful , we need to be able to handle the people around us. Especially people from different culture and experiences . If you find that they are too frank or blunt in whatever way you put it, just play along . To you it may be an insult but to them it is just part of show biz.. Take it in your strike and great success comes when you hear an insult and don’t feel the pain. Cheers keep up the good work.

    Hi Elvin,

People are speculating if this is a publicity stunt for the upcoming year-end blockbuster, but I am a blogger myself, and I sometimes write stuff like that too. It sounds sincere, so I believe you really feel that way. Don’t get too discouraged, because there will always be people around who will criticise you and put you down to make themselves feel great. However, be reminded that friends are there for a reason. Not everyone you meet in life is a good person; some people are just out to make life difficult for you. But do not be discouraged! You will still continue to respect him although he hasn’t been treating you the way a person should be treated, and I respect you greatly for that. I takes great humility, so keep it up. I think you’ve improved tremendously through the years, so keep on working hard, and don’t care about the non-constructive criticism people give you. Ultimately, they can say what they want and people won’t necessarily care, but it’s how you react that matters. You did the right thing to not retaliate.

After reading through the blogs entries by both party, I feel that it is just a misunderstanding. It may be difficult for Elvin to accept but there are bound to be differences and we have learn to be open hearted and open minded about it.

  186. Luke, on September 14th, 2010 at 10:23 pm said:

I am rather sensitive in a way too. Thus I have had misunderstanding with my bosses , colleagues , future in-laws. It is not that they are bad people, it is just that there are differences in the way we look at things and handle them. And this affects a sensitive person more than others. It also has to do with a lack of experiences (work or life). This can be both good and bad. Good in the way that we are young and fearless (leading to Elvin saying that he is fighting for his right, because he felt offended) . Bad in the way that there is no personal agenda on Guo Liang’s part. It is just the way he is , he is rather frank and this will hurt a sensitive person badly (when the remark isnt pleasant).

Guo Liang don’t act senior la. If you were so good, why did you end up in this little island? China so big, you cannot develop yourself as a host in your own native country?

Everyone know it is rude to interrupt someone as they are speaking. This is basic courtesy. My parents taught me. My school reinforced that. My friends practice that. As a host, and a public figure on television, Guo Liang should be ashamed of himself for such blatant rudeness.

I wonder if this is a deeply embedded culture that Guo Liang has got accustomed to and brought it over to Singapore. Correct me if i am wrong, local hosts such as Kym Ng has not done that before.

Regardless of which line you are in, the need to communicate well with co-workers is a must. Miscommunication, different views and tensions are inevitable. It is ok for one to complain and to vent his frustrations online. However, as a public figure, I think it is unwise and is immature of you to write such things on your blog. I am sure other artistes ( including Guo Liang) have encountered as incidents before. What you have done is a bad move. In your line, it is always better to have a friend than an enemy.

Hm i really feel that there is a major misunderstanding between both of u. i feel like both parties have their rights and wrongs.

I have to agree tht GL uses a little too harsh words on u but wad he said was right too. there are certain stuff that u can’t always use 还好 becos to some it sounds as if u dont be bothered to ans properly you see = u dont respect the person. Yes u might like the word 还好 and yes it is the best words to use if u dont wan to offend anyone like eg. ur girl-frens ask u does the dress suits her. U wont say no straight on her face right? u will say maybe others might be better. I guess that is what GL is trying to mean.

Wad i feel is it is best tht both of u can sit down tgt and clear all the misunderstands once and for all jus like how frens shld be. Do away all the seniority stuff cos it will make the matter worst.

All the best for u =)

People leaving negatives comments about Elvin being childish or making the wrong move or whatever must be a saint themselves.

    Ask yourself this.

If you think you are being bullied by a senior (in whatever kind of circumstances), would you or would you not grumble or complain to anybody???

If your answer is NO, well… continue to be your saint, swallow all the grievances down and suffer in silence.

I’m sure all of us complain. Thru whining or complaining or gossiping or bitching, you will actually feel better. So Elvin is using his own blog to vent his unhappiness and I dun see anything wrong with that.

You don’t think Elvin is mature enough to know the consequences behind this blog entry??? I’m sure Elvin has given it enough thoughts before posting it.

I’m not trying to side Elvin but any normal person who feels mistreated WILL complain or whine. Just bcos he is a celebrity he ain’t allow to post his unhappiness via his own blog??? There’s a bit too much to ask for.

The fault here lies with the media who is using this to stir trouble. Singapore media is eng eng bo dai ji do la. Just look at the number of days the Fann and Christopher’s wedding appeared in our local newspapers as headlines and you’ll know how bo liao our media is liao what.
