“real, raw, unedited”
January 17, 2011just some rantings… sometimes you just want to say, well, this is me, take it or leave it. no more pretence, no more fear, no more baggage. no more what the world wants of you, no more living in the eyes of others, no more living in expectation, anticipation, or approval. take away the hypocrisy, take away the worldly affair. why does the world want or make us to be “fake/pretentious, polished/coated/shelled, edited/pieced together/cut and paste” as opposed to what we are or can be? ” i want to be as “real, raw, unedited” as i can be. as i am. how else could i live life, or do i know how to live life, other than this, i asked myself.
I always ask myself. How to be a real ‘me’? For me I think it’s not easy. I wan to be myself, do whatever I like, go wherever I wan to go, eat whatever I wan to eat. This is the way we wan to live but it’s difficult to accomplish.
But at least recently I did something that I never experience it b4. Have a taste of it.
We need courage to overcome fear. This is life. I carry baggages whenever I go. Can I put it down for the time being? Jus for the time being. To let go all the worries, commitments, responsibilities….Can I?
Tats e cruel fact of life. At certain times, or with certain ppl, we need to pretend, in order to survive, in order to get into their circle, in order to b accepted. Its only wif true frenz, perhaps i can b myself? But most of e time, certain faces r still hidden.
Given a choice, i prefer to b original, but wif tat little pretence at times if it does make em feel better.
Take it, or leave it. Can we really say tat? Or are we more often forced by circumstances?
After reading tis blog, i realised i cld hv lost myself……

many a times, as much as we want and hope to face ppl with the ‘real’ us… we can’t. not just because we are fake or pretentious but sometimes its just how to get things work. if we can choose, who wldn’t want to bring the real self out yea? as the saying goes, “what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger!”
to be ‘real, raw, unedited’ i tend to only show it infront of closer ppl, at the right time. to the rest, they don’t deserve me showing them my true self anyway isn’t it? they don’t bother or care too.
i believe there’s a both sides in each of us, to meet & face diff ppl at diff circumstances. =)

i think sometimes we feel we can’t be ourselves, because we’re conscious of what others might think of us. but then again, if we don’t show who we really are, how do we know if people would accept the true us.
it takes truck loads of courage to truly be yourself, but i believe you can do it!
you are great the way you are, don’t let anyone (or maybe sometimes yourself) tell you otherwise! (:

It feels really annoying sometimes when we reflect that we cannot be ourselves. But, at times, the ‘fake’ us just gets ahead of the real us and take over. The ‘baggage’ and ‘identity’ that make us who we are, follows us. Even if we discovered the real us later in life, we cant just let the real take over, as it will be deemed as ‘hypocrisy’. What is the real us, anyway. What we show is normally what people expect of us. Its really saddening sometimes.

Sometimes people put on a mask to hide their insecurities or gain approval from their peers. By morphing into something that one isn’t, and changing a different type of mask every day can lead to loss of self concept. Don’t really know what is real about yourself anymore. Wouldn’t want that.
Neither do I want friends that aren’t genuine. No point being friends who don’t like you for who you are, but like you for what you are.
It’s sad to know how the world function: on deception, life may seem much simpler for the deceived yet more complicated for the liar. This phenomenon is common in the corporate world.

I guess that is how the world goes. As much as we like to be our real self, we can’t really afford to do it at times without being ridiculed or scrutinised by many others. At times, even friendships are foresaken and sacrificed.

Zou JieMing survives. He was playing the bagpipe at the tunnel where Zhou Ying passed by and met him.Why should he die? He is such a genius there.
I like the character you played in 破天网， i think zou jie ming is the one can be really real , raw and unedited. And i that is why we like it .
It was perplexing for me too. I thought he was dead cos he didnt speak and also it was too much of coincidence that Xiaoying met him at the tunnel right after paying her respects near the river – which was near the tunnel. Yet she smiled at Zou Jieming, which means he’s not dead? Cos if not then why wld she smile? Hmm.
Zou Jieming didn’t die! If Situ Dongcheng can be so drama doing so many stunts after getting shot too… I see no reason how would Zou Jieming die from just a shot from his arm? :p
Yea I know right! But there’s a scene where tang ying was reminiscing the past with zoujieming and recalling the things that zoujieming told her. It really seemed like it was her hallucination at the underpass scene. That’s why I was quite troubled! HAHA. Anw, thanks guys!
Your rantings are certainly valid and at some points of time in our lives, I find myself asking these too. But, I’ve learnt that, in life, we can’t be the “raw” selves that we want to be known as…not all the time, at least.
So I guess the other way to go then is – if we are at peace doing the things or being the way we are asked to be, isn’t that a way of living life too? Are you short-changing yourself?, you may ask. Well, I don’t think so, provided your CONSCIENCE tells you the same too.
We can only be ‘real, raw, unedited’ when we are alone, with our true friends, or possibly our family members. Many a times, we live through a mask. It is not pretentious but the way the world is crafted. However, as long as we stay true to our principles and beliefs and stand tall for what we do, we live our life conscientiously.

You are right. This world make us to fake and pretentious…I think I always live under the eyes of others…no freedom at all. We have to care about others feelings and opinions and left our own feelings behind.
even a lizard changes it colour to avoid danger surrounding.

Sometimes the world is so pretentious that when we meet real, genuine, “unedited” people, it’s so heartwarming.

Not sure if u read “To kill a Mockingbird”. I did it during my Os for E Lit and there was this verse Scout said about her father Atticus that really struck and inspired me:
Atticus is the same everywhere he goes. “He’s the same when he’s at home and when he’s at church. He’s the same when he talks with Calpurnia, who takes care of his children, and when he visits with neighbors. He’s the same when he goes to the state legislature, and when he goes to represent a black man against a rape charge.”
She was talking about her father’s consistency in character, personality and the way he treated people. When I read that, I was inspired as I wanted to be the kind of genuine, consistent person that he was – without bias, insecurity, pretense or fear :)

It's like when one lies about something.
One have to think of another lie to cover up the first, then one will have of ANOTHER lie to cover up the second and so on..
It. will. be. never-ending!! It's like a "vicious cycle". So it's best not to head towards that kinda direction.. but I'm sure you won't anyway. :p 'cause i know you aren't that kinda person!

be truthful and real to ourselves. have courage to face fear and tell nasty people off nicely but not pretentious. eg. i would tell off nasty people” look here, you may not like me but what you did right now is not very nice.” and just walk away. at least we earn back our own respect and dignity. In life, we just have to be truthful to ourselves and why bother the fake “dummies” be good to people who treat you human and confront nasty dummies with courage in a tone down manner . let nasty dummies go think on their own their acts and guilts.:)

Like what many have mentioned, we can only be our “real” self when we are with closer people, family and true friends.
But sometimes I really wonder how we can differentiate the meaning between, close friend, true friend and best friend.
When we show our “real” self, would people mind? how would they think of us as a person?
Whenever I wanted to share my thoughts with a friend, I didn’t know who to go to. I had some friends in mind, but I am always unsure if that person is the right one. How do i know if that friend is considered as my true friend?
p.s. sorry if im going out of topic. Just some sudden thoughts in mind after I read your post. (:
The raw and unedited you is the one that is deep within.
Real? Raw? Unedited? Really can make it through? Honesty reflects. Even as much as you want to, knowing how impossible things are, around you especially. Sometimes left with not much better choices too. Ranting out is good; otherwise there isn’t much to be done other than being edited in some-ways. Accept the fact of being a high profile Mr. Popular. Mention last year about your honesty definition, being able to lay out both the good and bad sides of you, being comfortable enough to do so with courage, even so image is then important in as such critical period of being a pop among all.
Personal or Work no longer make much difference some how, maybe that’s why you may be frustrated ranting it away. Being honest and raw may hurts the image of a pop’s image however edited version help to keep peeps around still feel they are in a dreamland with “that” perfect one. Humanity is characterized not only by human strengths but human flaws too but no-one seems practically accepting the facts of facts. Putting all their dream fantasy on a pop is what human does nowadays despite whether they are married or single or some even with children already. As such pop’s image have to be somehow edited to suits those unpractical fantasy in within and also more topics for the reporters to do their creative news.
I believe you are a good person, happiness finds you, love finds you too. Whether is real/fake, raw/polished, unedited/cut and paste, nothing changes the fact that you are still you unless you doubt about yourself. Believe what you deserve, no-one could replace what it takes to be you.

Dear Elvin, we met at Zouk before. Somehow I think I know what you truly want to express. It’s easier said than done, isn’t it? Don’t let it stop you from being real, true to yourself, and the ones you care about. This will be your biggest regret in the future… tc.
I guess as an actor, you can’t be 100% yourself so as to be professional in the career of actor. After all, you are role model to your fans.
BUT, fortunately, you can be 100% your good self infront of the TV. That means, you can still be yourself but you don’t necessary have to show off the flaws in you. And if you really have flaws which is normal (we all have), the more you shouldn’t show. If you don’t show, day by day, you curb your flaws and you will be a better man, a more perfect man.
Why going against the current of the flow when you are moving forward, and think backward about the past now? You can move with lesser effort with the strong current now and move forward while just diverting alittle.. to the right direction.
